The Grand Theatre of Rabat (French: Théâtre Royal de Rabat) is a landmark performing arts center in Rabat, Morocco, designed by the late Zaha Hadid and her firm Zaha Hadid Architects. Completed in 2021 and officially inaugurated on October 29, 2024, it is recognized as Africa’s largest performing arts venue. I’ve passed by this amazing architectural building from a boat and land and hope to visit soon!

Located on the banks of the Bouregreg River, the complex spans approximately 27,000 square meters and features a main 1,800-seat indoor auditorium with crystalline acoustic geometry inspired by traditional Moroccan muqarnas, and a 7,000-seat open-air amphitheater. The building’s fluid, neo-futuristic design is inspired by the river’s flow and Arabic calligraphy, serving as a centerpiece of King Mohammed VI’s national cultural development program.  The structure is so significant that it was featured on Morocco’s 20-dirham banknote issued in 2024. 

The architectural design of the Royal Theatre reflects several characteristics associated with Zaha Hadid‘s work, particularly its sweeping curves, fluid forms and sculptural treatment of space. The overall composition draws inspiration from the winding course of the Bou Regreg and incorporates references to Arabic calligraphy and elements of Islamic Architecture and Moroccan architectural tradition.

The Royal Theatre is located on the left bank of the Bou Regreg River, within the urban area between Rabat and Sale. It is situated near several of Rabat’s principal historic and architectural landmarks, including the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and overlooks the Bou Regreg valley and the Kasbah of the Udayas

The Royal Theatre opened to the public on 22 April 2026 during an inaugural artistic program attended by Princesses Lalla Khadija, Lalla Meryem and Lalla Hasnaa, together with Brigitte Macron.

Design: The futuristic venue features a large multipurpose room with 1,822 seats, capable of hosting diverse cultural events in the Moroccan capital.

Timeline: Construction was launched in October 2014 and finished in 2021, staying true to Hadid’s signature fluid and sculptural style.
