From London – Family Holiday

Traveling with children to London can be a marvelous experience. With my very kid friendly guides, everyone can enjoy the experience. Museums, famous buildings, culture, history and fascinating customs. Walks by the Thames with a guide explaining historical facts, cruises on the river, see the old London & the ultra-new side of the city. A ride in an open top bus provides perspective on each interesting neighborhood location. A typical few days with children is outlined below. Hotels can be selected by location or personal preference. I work with many hotels who pamper my clients. I also partner with an exclusive behind the scenes firm; we offer amazing, private out of the ordinary excursions.

A suggested evening: dinner at The Wolseley, followed by performance of theatre. London is home to numerous first run theatre productions; many are quite suitable for children. “Billy Eliot”, “Mary Poppins”, “Grease”, and “We Will Rock You” are just a few.

Next morning

Guide will meet family at hotel and begin day of sightseeing. Here are some– but not all– of the possibilities for private tours:

• Open top bus tour, Westminster Abbey.

• Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace, private viewing behind the crowded gates, enjoy behind the scenes tour and avoid the crowds; speak to the guards about their duties, pet their horses if you are inclined!

• Boat to Greenwich tour options: Royal Observatory, Cutty Sark,

Docklands Museum, National Maritime Museum, Royal Observatory or

London Aquarium, Museums, London Dungeon, Victoria & Albert

Museum, Madame Tussad’s Wax Museum.

Afternoon/Evening Options

• Driver at hotel, transport to London Eye Private Pod, where you will enjoy drinks & nibbles served on board in your private pod, see and photograph the amazing views of the city from the Pod. Walk to dinner

afterwards.

• Private boxes at theatre can be arranged, it is also possible to meet with cast members.

• Jewel House-Private Tour Family will be greeted by a Beefeater. You will hear tales of Henry VIII and how and where he dealt with his unwanted wives and see the infamous Traitor’s Gate. Your Beefeater will then host you with champagne and canapés while you enjoy a private viewing of the Crown Jewels. After a quick dinner locally, you will return to the Tower to watch the Ceremony of the Keys. This ceremony is the traditional locking up of the Tower of London and has taken place on each and every night, without fail, for at least 700 years. The importance of securing this fortress for the night is still very relevant because although the Monarch no longer resides at this Royal Palace, the Crown Jewels and many other valuables still do.

More Sightseeing In & Around London

• Brass Rubbing Center St. Martin in the Fields is one of London’s most charismatic churches. Trafalgar Square borders the church. Down in the crypt is the Brass Rubbing Center, where you can rub a replica brass to create a color picture of a knight in armor, a gracious Queen, a mythological beast or intricate Celtic patterns.

• Charter a lovely little boat, Aberdonia, one of the few private charters on the Thames. Motor from Chelsea Harbor to Hampton Place. The Captain has piloted Michael Caine and other celebrities. Due to the number of limited licenses available and the considerable restrictions for sailing on the Thames, this is as good a boat as one can get! Journey time is three hours, gourmet picnic lunch can be served on board. Fully stocked with Champagne and soft drinks, what better way to enjoy the Thames! Disembark & enjoy a tour of Hampton Court, either motor back to Chelsea Harbor or return by private car.

From Tuscany

At one of my favorite hillside villas, my client family observed a wild fox that stole the children’s shoes each night from the front steps. “Foxy,” as the family named him, became the subject of nightly stories; a tale forever etched in the children’s memories, a lovely lifetime gift. A note from my client read: ‘Foxy is much smarter than we originally imagined. He has taken to stealing our shoes and hiding them in his den down the hill in the vineyard. He stands guard over his quarry and tonight I had to muster all the prowess of an African hunter to reclaim a pair of sandals. He did manage to eat the better part of one shoe before the rescue. He is cute and will become the subject of many family tales in the future.’

I brought in a wonderful Italian chef, Giovanni, who taught the children to prepare pizza for lunch. The adults accompanied the chef to the neighboring village to shop for regional ingredients and toured wineries in the rolling hillsides in preparation for their own sumptuous Tuscan feast. The most enjoyable part comes when you finally realize that you can make your own hand made pasta accompanied by “sugo di carne” or “pollo alla diavola” or “tiramisu.”

In Siena, enjoy the spectacular medieval-style Corsa del Palio, held twice yearly on July 2 and Aug 16. Exclusive visit to the private Palazzo d’Elci: view the Palio from your private window, perched above the wild scene! Two or three windows on the top floor of the Palazzo can be reserved, a James Bond movie filmed here in the summer of 2007. From the windows of the Palazzo, you can see the festivities below: the square is filled with a wonderful procession of flag throwers, and a historic parade of the contradas dressed in their finery. There is still a lot to discover in Tuscany.

Family memories are intrinsic in planning these wonderful journeys.
