What is a UK ETA for US Citizens? The UK electronic travel authorization (UK ETA) is a new entry requirement for US citizens traveling to the United Kingdom. It is a type of advance travel permission that grants visitors permission to enter the UK for short stays for specific purposes, including:
- Tourism, visiting family and friends, specific business purposes, or short-term study for up to six months.
- Traveling to the UK using the Creative Worker visa concession for up to three months.
- Permitted paid engagements.
- Transiting through the UK.
Any US citizens traveling to the UK for short-term stays will not be allowed to enter without an ETA from January 8th, 2025. Visitors from the US, Australia, and Canada (amongst others) will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the UK starting from January 8,2025.
This initiative is part of the UK government’s effort to fully digitize border control. The ETA will provide both travelers and carriers with more confidence regarding travel eligibility. An online application must be completed, and a small fee will be charged, it is similar to the US ESTA system.

Notably, EU citizens are exempt from this requirement until April 2nd, 2025. It is important to clarify that the ETA is not a visa but a visa waiver, which means travelers from countries already needing a visa will still need to apply for one.
To apply for an ETA, you will need a valid passport, an email address, travel details, and a debit or credit card for payment. You can apply online through the UK government website, or via their dedicated ETA app. They are encouraging use of the app over the website, promising a quick 10-minute application process and potentially faster responses on the app versus the website. It’s very straightforward: enter your contact info, scan your passport chip, let the app scan your face, take a selfie, and pay $12.65.
How long does it last? The Electronic Travel Authorization will last two years with unlimited entries, so frequent UK travelers, even those who just touch down in Heathrow to sprint to a connecting flight, should just go ahead and apply now.
Please note, for those travelers who are combining trip to the UK and Ireland, an ETA will be required. The requirement applies to those who are traveling from The Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland (even for a day trip). It also applies to travelers who are transiting to another country via the UK.
