I’m passionate about travel and unique experiences; interested in meeting local people, studying architecture, discovering and learning as much as possible about every city I visit. I adore Paris, yearn to see more of Africa, a recent visit to Istanbul reminds me that there is much more to see in Turkey. A passage to India allowed me to explore the rich and diverse culture, and I barely scratched the surface of this amazing country. Love to sail, discover music and indigenous food of each region, seek out the best markets and design, and of course dine at the local restaurants. I particularly love roaming Africa, recently explored Argentina and India, which deserve another visit. A devoted Francophile, love all things Parisian, world music, excellent wines & champagne.

Ristras – Hot Symbols of New Mexico

In the fall in New Mexico, you can buy decorative, but edible, strands of Ristras, the long strings adorn fences, terraces and architectural portals. Used as decorative strands across a rustic wooden table, woven crosses adorn churches and ancient wrought iron gates and strands of chilies are woven into beautiful heart shaped decor. They are said to bring good health and good luck, more often they are hung outside to dry and used later for cooking.

Ristras are traditional strings of dried chili peppers often hung in kitchens and doorways, both as a means of preservation and as a decorative element. Originating in the American Southwest, particularly in New Mexico, ristras are not only practical but also hold cultural significance.

The vibrant red color of the chilis adds a touch of warmth and authenticity to any setting, making them a beloved symbol of Southwestern heritage.

New Mexicans consume more chile per capita than any other group in the United States. It is an essential ingredient of “Mexican or Southwestern food,” the fastest growing food sector in the United States.

With an optimum climate for growing pungent chile with low annual precipitation, irrigation is essential and increases pungency. The high desert climate provides the intensity of sunlight, warm days, cool nights and daily breezes, which help to dry the plants after a rain or morning dew. Several hundred varieties of chiles are grown in New Mexico, including New Mexican (green and red), cayenne, and jalapeño.

I’m captivated by the vibrant color, the deep sense of tradition exemplified by these edible decorations. The Four Seasons Guest host was kind enough to ship my 6-foot strand and after hanging outside for a month, it has been a beautiful memento of my visit to Santa Fe.

If you can’t visit Santa Fe every fall, the Hatch Chili store offers a beautiful selection of Ristras!

Truffle Temptations, a World of Wine and Truffles – Mandarin Milano

My upcoming stay at the Mandarin Oriental Milano in spring has me very excited to return to this city. One of the few Mandarin exclusive offerings. Autumn Adventure: Truffle hunting in Langhe, a hilly region in Piedmont, Italy, has a long history that dates to ancient times. The Langhe region is renowned for producing the prized white truffle (Tuber magnatum), which is one of the most expensive and sought-after culinary delicacies in the world.

A hint of my first foray to Milan, I carried a small pocket film camera up the winding stairs to the roof top of the majestic Gothic masterpiece Duomo, the gargoyle photos are still on my office walls. The fifth largest church in the world is still a primary attraction of the city. Its completion took 400 years! The Duomo is home to an impressive array of statues—over 3,400 in total, making it the cathedral with the highest number of statues in the world.

Surrounded by the magnificent snowcapped mountains of the Alps, Alba is hilly and slightly mountainous and the best way to get here is a scenic 2-hour drive from Milan. Meet the truffle master and a renowned truffle hunting dog, an expert in the woods! Pull up your wellies and hike through leaf carpet grounds, surrounded by the sounds and scents of the fall forest, the perfect setting of rust and gold crunchy leaves.

Autumn outings rewarded by a handful of white truffles. Chefs all over the region celebrate the white tuber. What is your favorite dish to enjoy the precious tuber? One of my favorites is a delicate Ravioli al Uovo, with browned sage butter. What favorite wine to enjoy, a glass of Antoniolo ‘San Francesco’ Riserva, Gattinara, Alto Piedmont, or a sweet sherry, or a Barbaresco, an aged Chardonnay?

From October to December, the international white Truffle Fair of Alba is a time of celebration. Black truffles are found in Central Italy, especially Umbria and Piedmont. .

Only one of the many offerings of Mandarin Milano! Highly Recommend !
