Hotel Wailea, Maui

A hidden gem set amidst 15 sprawling acres of manicured Hawaiian gardens, Hotel Wailea was designed to reflect a spacious mountain retreat featuring rolling hillsides of indigenous blooming plants, plunging streams, koi ponds and waterfalls. Nature is abundant with birdsong, soothing splashing falls and the island trade winds feathering the coconut and palm trees. An elegant adults only sanctuary perched on a hillside with dramatic views of three islands.

The all suite hotel was originally designed in the 1980’s as a private members club for Japanese businessmen. Now managed by Relais and Chateaux, the hotel also hosts a fabulous restaurant perched above the gardens – Capische? Chef  Brian Etheredge creates Northern Italian with a nod to Island flavor. Lobster and Burrata Caprese is a scrumptious starter, with basil and herbs from the kitchen garden. Capische? Should be on your dining list no matter where you stay in Maui!

Dramatic sea views from the 72 one-bedroom suites, the pied-à-terre style rooms are equipped with small kitchens, a living room and a comfy spacious terrace. Wild birds visit during breakfast pecking up crumbs! The contemporary suites and pubic spaces make use of local coral and limestone smoked white oak floors, and custom-crafted Hawaiian Ohia cabinetry, all complemented by casually elegant accessories including artwork by the legendary local big wave surfer turned artist, Pete Cabrinha.

The adult’s only pool is relaxing haven; private cabañas dot the edge of the pool for the shade seekers. Pool bar serves complimentary wine every afternoon and from my bar perch, it was easy to understand why the guests flock to the bar to enjoy the hand crafted cocktails served with a flourish by the bartender. Guests traded their sightseeing stories each afternoon, really a comfortable and fun hotel bar.  A friendly waiter wanders among the loungers and cabañas with trays of delectable delights, lovely service and an enticement to make a reservation for the terrace or garden spots at Capishe?Fitness Lounge Amazing View!

Intimate in scale, but big on service and experience seems to be the mantra at Hotel Wailea.
