Dordogne – Oui, it’s not too late!

The Tuscany of France – the crowds are departing, September is a divine time to visit the attractive hill country, full of  picturesque villages, castles; Dordogne with limestone cliffs, the prehistoric cave paintings at Les Eyzies, Lascaux- a UNESCO world heritage site.

Most famous for its gourmet delights, notably foie gras, walnuts and truffles. One of my fondest memories in this area is approaching a stooped old man, jaunty in his black beret, on the edge of the country cobblestone road. He was selling walnuts from his roadside stand, lack of language skills didn’t prevent me from making a purchase… I scooped out a handful of French coins and Francs (yes, this was many years ago!), and let him select the coins. Commerce on a twisty mountain road, I happily nibbled nuts for several days, delighted with my petite interaction with a local.

This was one of my first driving experiences in France on the narrow country roads, speed limits are merely suggestions, an unexpected encounter with a shepherd and his flock of sheep might induce a momentary need to slow the pace.

Ancient chateau’s are available, some with charming converted pigeonnier’s- although they appear sweet, say non.  Relais and Chateaux properties are abundant in this area, perfect!
